Hello Dianne, Charley was negative using the SNAP immunoassay (which means there was not enough p27 antigen in her blood to be picked up by the test). A lot of cats that have leukemia may have it as a latent form too which means they have viral D...

Right. (Duh.) Of course Charley can have prednisone--she's FeLV negative now. That's just so amazing. It must have been a great day when you found that out. Are those Charley's siblings in the photo? They look like triplets. Judah is FeLV+. We hav...

Hi Becky, Please ask your Vet if Judah needs an appetite stimulant. Here are two appetite stimulants I know of: Cyproheptadine 4mg. Dosage: 2mg (1/2 pill once a day). You may want to buy a pet piller (pill gun) to administer the medication. Si...

Hello Becky, The 'non regenerative' term is given by the lab for cats that have reticulocyte counts below 15000 (Charley is at 14250). I guess sometimes she is making blood and sometimes she is not. Have you had Judah tested again? Is he still po...

Hi Lori, I'm sorry to hear that Charley's reticulocycte count is down again. Hopefully, this is just a low point in the cyle and the reticulocytes will rebound soon. Charley's history of oscillating reticulocyte counts seems to make the adjective ...

Approach with Caution

Hello Families of Animals,

With great concern I am writing in regards to the folks that have contacted me regarding feline leukemia and AIDS. My blog was simply for the sharing of information and how pets are responding to the LTCI drug. I am not a veterinarian nor am I formally trained in animal care...I just wanted a post to share information. The internet can be a great tool or a dangerous one depending on how it is used. With anything, even dietary changes you should consult your vet first.… Continue

Feline Leukemia support group

Hello,

I have been contacted by a lot of folks who unfortunately had the diagnosis of feline leukemia or feline AIDs for their beloved cat. If anyone is interested in joining a support group to share not only medical information (what worked, what didn't), we could support each other in our efforts. It is a heavy burden dealing with a sick friend, and I just want to let you all know that you are not alone. Others have been through or are presently going through this. If you want to talk this is… Continue

A friend sent this to me...we have too many Reggies....

They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie
as I looked at him lying in his pen. the shelter was
clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly.
I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere
I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and
open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the
street.

But something was still missing as I attempted to
settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog
couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk to.
And I had just seen Reggie's adve… Continue

Lets Have fun!

First of all, I am a bit confused by some of these other blogs...are those folks unaware that this is a site dedicated to pets and the people they own? Sheesh!
Can I comment on pet toys? My cats and dogs happen to be the worlds most spoiled creatures. They have every new toy that comes out and there are baskets full of their play things in every corner. But, to be frank, I think they are over stimulated because my dogs have a (singular) toy they won't part with and the cats get bored after a few… Continue

De-worm small animals with caution

Hello All,

As I mentioned on previous posts I rescue dogs and kittens in my neighborhood (spay, neuter, medical care). Recently we came across a sick cat that was so violently sick that we had to euthanize her. She had one kitten that initially seem to respond to our care (feeding etc...). He stopped eating but was still drinking well. His urine turned darker yellow signaling possible dehydration issues. We took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection with a feve… Continue

Our beloved cat Fergus was put to sleep this morning, after a long struggle against the symptoms of FIV and feline leukemia. He was with us for only four years and was about 10 years old. Fergus was all about physical affection. His favorite spot was on the sofa between us, a shoulder on one and a back paw on the other. In the morning he held down Judy’s lap while she drank coffee and read the paper. At night he spent hours curled up on Bill’s right shoulder, having slunk beneath his chin to avoid detection.

In his relentless pursuit of his own goals he could occasionally be a pain in the neck. He flatly refused to accept the role of house cat. His ability to wedge open a 30-pound wooden porch door with a single paw led to frequent cries of “Jailbreak!” as Bill and I scurried to find him and bring him back into the house. He loved to be picked up and carried around. When we peered out the back door window together he would alternate between rapt scrutiny of the yard and rubbing his head against me, purring loudly. Once, when he was snoozing on the back of the sofa, I lay down for a rest, my head a few inches beneath him. He gently lowered a back paw onto my head so we could be in touch.

He was a wonderful boy, who instantly changed us from a couple into a family. We miss him very, very much.

Lori, are you a vet or a chemist or something like that? You have such a deep technical understanding of all this...

Lori -

Now that I'm back home can see Fergus for myself, I so, so wish I had positive news to give you... But Fergus is no better, in fact, he's worse. He's lost weight, he's very weak - my once plump, muscular, vigorous & mischievous cat is now a limp, sad version of his former self. Now he won't eat, even when placed in front of the food bowl. I'm looking into getting the appetite stimulant Joanne suggested, but it calls for squirting 5ml of syrup down his throat 2xday - wouldn't it be better to squirt liquefied chicken liver or baby food down his throat? Can't reach my vet at the moment, 3rd shot scheduled for Friday. Unless that wreaks a miracle....

Many thanks, Lori. I have passed Joanne's suggestion alone to my vet & hopefully when Fergus does in for his second shot on Friday he could receive the appetite stimulant if the vet agrees.

Many thanks for your concern & support. My husband says Fergus doesn't seem any better to him, still listless, sleeping most of the day, eating w/out enthusiasm, although he is more active in the mornings & does ask to go out on the porch. I feel terrible being away from him. His next shot is on Friday & I won't get home until next Tuesday.

Lori - You wrote "the appetite stimulant that Joanne suggested?" I don't know what this refers to. I only see conversations between the two of us in the thread & there are no messages in my inbox. Should I look somewhere else?

Many thanks for your interest. He is holding his own. The day following the first shot he got his purr back, which was wonderful. But he's still very lethargic & needs to be put down in front of the food bowl before he will eat. I am out of town on a business trip & my husband is manning the ICU. How long before Charley really seemed to be better?

Fergus just got his first shot of LTCI. Thankfully, the vet misquoted the price - it is now more in line with what you are paying (whew!). We are watching and waiting.

Lori - I just heard from my vet. He contacted Imulan directly & was told that it would cost $380 for the first 3 doses. I have authorized him to order it to see if it has any effect, but this is not an cost we can keep up. Would it be at all possible to ask your vet how she is able to obtain it for $65 per shot? Many, many thanks. Judy

It just seems very strange to me. If vets were more aware of it & the price point slightly lower (say, $45 per shot), LOTS more people would take advantage of it & would send Imulan's profits soaring, I would think. And the money they must be sinking into mass marketing would go a long way to funding controlled clinical trials. I don't get it. No word yet from my vet, alas, & Fergus is sinking. He's still eating, but I have to pick him up from the couch & put him in front of the food bowl to get him to do so.
